One person? Two people? A handful? No one? The actual number is quite possibly more than you think, because hearing loss \u2014 the inability or reduced ability to perceive sounds that enter the ear \u2014 is much more common than many realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States and Canada together, for example, millions of people live with hearing loss. Numbers may vary per organization, government agency, or study, but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Johns Hopkins researchers have estimated that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/NEWS\/MEDIA\/RELEASES\/ONE_IN_FIVE_AMERICANS_HAS_HEARING_LOSS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 percent of Americans 12 or older<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 about one out of every five \u2014 has some form of hearing loss.<\/li><li>The Canadian Hearing Society has stated that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chs.ca\/FACTS-AND-FIGURES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly a quarter of adult Canadians<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 close to one in four \u2014 has reported experiencing some level of hearing impairment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In both countries, hearing loss also represents one of the top chronic physical conditions \u2014 even, in the case of the United States, ahead of diabetes or cancer. It\u2019s a growing concern affecting children and adults, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/NEWS-ROOM\/FACT-SHEETS\/DETAIL\/DEAFNESS-AND-HEARING-LOSS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approximately 34 million youth worldwide<\/a>. In fact, it\u2019s one of the most common birth defects in Canada and possibly the most common one in the U.S. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>THE GOOD NEWS?<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most hearing loss can be effectively managed with solutions such as hearing aids, helping you stay connected to the people, places, and experiences that matter most. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>THE BAD NEWS?<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Only a fraction of those who could benefit from hearing help actually seek or receive it, making hearing loss an undertreated issue.&nbsp;<strong>Even worse, hearing loss not only impacts communication but can go hand in hand with other problems such as social isolation, depression, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and risk of falls.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you know?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Like hearing loss, cardiovascular disease \u2014 including heart disease and stroke \u2014 is a global public-health challenge. It\u2019s the No. 1 killer worldwide, with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/cardiovascular_diseases\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 18 million deaths annually<\/a>\u00a0per World Health Organization estimates, and is linked to hearing loss. Precisely how cardiovascular disease and hearing loss are connected isn\u2019t yet conclusive in all cases, but researchers have found, for example, that those with heart disease are\u00a054 percent more likely\u00a0to experience a hearing loss \u2014 even more so if they\u2019ve suffered a heart attack.\u00a0<strong>Some risk factors such as age, gender, and family history can\u2019t be helped, but healthy choices such as the following can make a difference in helping prevent either condition:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Avoiding tobacco<\/li><li>Following a healthy diet<\/li><li>Exercising regularly<\/li><li>Getting regular hearing and overall checkups<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Take it to heart, and spread the word!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How many people in your life have hearing difficulties?
